URBAN EVOLUTION

I study how animals and plants evolve rapidly in cities, and I am part of the large international GLUE consortium (which stands for Global Urban Evolution). In a paper in Science, we showed how in 160 cities worldwide, white clover is evolving in the urban ecosystem.”

TROPICAL BIODIVERSITY

I lived and worked in Borneo from 2000 to 2006, and since then have led numerous research expeditions, including one to Mount Kinabalu that led to this paper.

PERCEPTIONS OF BIODIVERSITY

Together with Ionica Smeets and Anne Land, I study the perceptions of biodiversity among there general public. In this paper, we introduce the concept of ‘species literacy”

GENITALIA

I work on the evolution of animals’ naughty bits: their genitalia. In this paper, we describe the vicious teethed jaws that some seed beetles carry on their penises.
