Identification services: I offer reliable identification services for all European Coleoptera, for all European terrestrial Gastropoda, and for all Southeast Asian terrestrial Gastropoda. Send me an e-mail for a quotation.
Below is a list of recent publications in scientific journals authored or co-authored by Menno.
In this 2019 paper in Communications Biology, we use citizen science to show that land snails in the Netherlands are evolving lighter-coloured shells in urban heat islands.
With my PhD student Michiel Hooykaas and colleagues Ionica Smeets and Casper Albers, I conducted a 2019 study that explores how well children, the general public, and professionals are able to identify common animal species.
With colleagues from the University of Verona, I am developing technology to help citizen scientists identify species in the field using DNA, as explained in this 2019 paper in Genes.
I have been working for more than 20 years on the land snails of Borneo. In this 2019 paper in Ecography, my colleagues and I study how snail communities in Borneo manage to remain stable over the past 25,000 years.
In 2012, I organised a large, international expedition to Mount Kinabalu in Borneo. We used DNA analysis of endemic animals and plants to uncover the evolution of the unique biota on the mountaintop, which led to this 2015 paper in Nature.
